When to plant beetroot

Beetroot seeds can be typically planted in greenhouses and cold frames in April ready to plant outdoors in May. Don’t start them off to early outside, wait until it warms up they will soon catch up

Varieties of beetroot

The main variety are Boltardy which are commonly grown by most. There are many other varieties including Pablo, Red Ace, Blankoma. These varieties can be easily picked up at garden centres or from online shops.

Planting

Beetroot can either been grown in seed trays or straight in the soil when it has warmed up in May/June. I tend to start all mine off in seed trays and plant out when they are well established. If you are planting in seed trays sprinkle the seeds evenly on top of compost then cover with another layer of compost. Water the seeds then cover the tray with a layer of cling film to keep warm and moist until the seeds pop through. Once they pop through take the cling film off. When the plants are large enough plant out in the desired place 30cm apart. If you are planting straight into the soil plant 2 seeds every 10 centimeters then once they are big enough thin these out

Growing

If you leave beetroot too long to dry out this can lead to woody roots but then if you water often it can cause splitting. It is advised to water every 10-14 days in dry spells. Adding mulch can help keep the soil moist.

Harvesting

It takes about 10-15 weeks from planting the seed to harvesting. Pick them when they are young and tender.
