National Tree week

This week is national tree week. Trees are obviously an important factor and something we all need to keep us alive.

Here in Sheffield the trees hit the news after Sheffield won a grant to have all the roads resurfaced, street signs replaced, traffic signals replaced, street lights upgraded and all the trees looked after. But as well as the trees being looked after they were cutting down the ones that were diseased. But the ones that were getting cut down turned out to be in the hundreds. This then caused mass protests and people getting arrested. Sheffield is known as a green city. The council did say that they were replacing the ones that were getting cut down but obviously they are only baby trees and would not do the same job as one that had been there over 50 years. Thankfully now this has ceased.

Having an allotment you can obviously plant your own trees – I have 6 fruit trees on my plot. All these were put in by myself since I got the plot 13 years ago. If you have the space I encourage you all to go out and buy at least two trees to plant on your plot – you can look after them so they don’t grow massive. If you have not got room you can actually buy ones that go in pots now.

Now is the ideal time to plant fruit trees as the ground keeps wet for them to get establised.

Let’s do our bit and plant more trees and encourage others to join in.
