How to grow tips and advice

In this section of our website will give you advice and tips on how to grow peas through to harvesting them

Sowing and Planting

People who grow peas are known for picking the peas and eating them even before they get to the pot or the kitchen. These can be one of the nicest things to grow on the allotment. Peas like a good soil that has had additions of compost and well rotted manure added to the soil. Having good soil preparation helps the plants when the weather gets hot also keeping them watered and mulching round the base of the plants

When to plant

You can plant peas from March right through to July depending on the variety. But do not be tempted to plant in too cold weather or wet weather as this will affect germination.

Varieties

  • English peas,
  • Snow peas,
  • Sugar snap peas

Planting

A common method that a lot of gardeners use when growing peas is to make a flat trench in your plot about 6cm deep and 25cm wide using a hoe. Give the trench a good water then you can sow your peas. These need to be sown about 5-7 cm apart in 2 – 3 rows. If you push down the pea a little so that it does not become displaced when the trench is back filled with soil.

Growing

Peas are grown up supports so that they do not become to top heavy once they start growing and that they dont just flop over. I tend to use chicken wire to grow them up, but you can use netting or sticks.

Harvesting

Harvest peas frequently to ensure freshness. If you think the peas have gone past there prime still pick them as they are taking the growing power from the plant
