Planting Guide for May
We have made a guide of what can be planted in May. Hope this helps everyone.
Outside
All these can be planted outside – but take extra precaution as frost is still around. Cover at night to take extra care or still sow in a greenhouse.
- Florence Fennel – make sure you only plant seeds outside when soil is really warm. Keep some seeds to start off another batch in a months time to keep the produce coming
- Kale
- Spinach
- Swiss chard
- Peas – make sure they are protected from the birds
- Sweetcorn – sow in blocks rather than rows to help with pollination. Make cloches out of milk bottles to protect from slugs and snails
- Lettuces and other salad crops
- Carrots – Protect from carrot fly with fleece
- Beetroot – may need covering if the soil is still cold and damp
- Swedes
- Turnip
Inside
All these should be planted inside as they need the extra warmth to germinate.
- Chilies
- Peppers
- Cucumbers
- French Beans
- Runner Beans
- Courgettes
- Pumpkins
- Squash
- Melons
