Planting Guide for May

We have made a guide of what can be planted in May. Hope this helps everyone.

Outside

All these can be planted outside – but take extra precaution as frost is still around. Cover at night to take extra care or still sow in a greenhouse.

  • Florence Fennelmake sure you only plant seeds outside when soil is really warm. Keep some seeds to start off another batch in a months time to keep the produce coming
  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Swiss chard
  • Peasmake sure they are protected from the birds
  • Sweetcorn sow in blocks rather than rows to help with pollination. Make cloches out of milk bottles to protect from slugs and snails
  • Lettuces and other salad crops
  • CarrotsProtect from carrot fly with fleece
  • Beetroot may need covering if the soil is still cold and damp
  • Swedes
  • Turnip

Inside

All these should be planted inside as they need the extra warmth to germinate.
